Just before the NBA season started the hot topic, outside of Miami, was what would the Denver Nuggets do about Carmelo Anthony? Anthony, who is in the last year of his contract, stated that he would not re-sign with Denver leaving his team with the option of trading their best player or losing him with nothing in return at the end of the season.
Anthony said he would like to be traded to the Knicks and once the Knicks found out they’ve been in talks with Denver to make a deal that makes sense for both teams. Outside of a potential New Jersey Nets trade for Anthony that went bust there has been little talk about other teams, until now.
Enter the defending NBA Champions Los Angeles Lakers. Los Angeles sports talk radio would bring up the mega trade whenever the Lakers hit a losing skid but it was just talk and wishful thinking. The thought around town was that the Lakers, like the past two seasons, may lose games from time to time but they would be fine by the time the Playoffs start. Unfortunately for the Lakers they have consistently struggled against other elite teams, something they didn’t do in recent years. This fact plus an aging Kobe Bryant made the Lakers brass move into action.
League sources are now reporting that the Lakers would send Andrew Bynum and perhaps another player for Anthony. If Denver is trying to make a deal that would make sense with the Knicks then this one should be a no-brainer. Denver is stuck between a rock and a hard place and needs to move Anthony before the trade deadline and it seems that the best player they would get in return for Anthony is Bynum.
The trade would work for the Lakers as well. With Bryant getting older the Lakers need another star that can take over a game and let Bryant get some much needed rest and Anthony would fit that roll perfectly. Even if the Lakers have to give up Bynum in order to get Anthony they still have big bodies with Odom and Gasol. Some people have said that Bryant and Anthony both demand the ball and putting them on the same team would be a problem. These people did not see how well Bryant and Anthony played together on the US Olympic team. Bryant demands the ball because he is the best player on the team but he would gladly give up the ball to Anthony because he respects his play and skill.
If the Knicks don’t add another player in the deal and if no other team steps up then I see this trade with the Lakers happening soon. The Lakers will miss Bynum but will fall in love with Anthony and 29 other NBA teams will once again watch as the Lakers win yet another Championship.
Figure Things Out
Bryant at 32 years old has played 14 seasons. Anthony is only 26 and has played 7 seasons. Andrew Bynum is 23 and has played 5 seasons.
