Make sure they have plenty of water throughout the day. The hotter is gets the more water dogs need to drink to stay hydrated. You may need to replace the water during the day because the water temperature will rise making it tougher for dogs to cool down. The bowl you use for water should be heavy enough or placed in a way where the dogs wont be able to tip it over and spill the water out.
Pools
Another way to keep your dogs cool is with the use of a small plastic pool. The pool only needs be filled to where the paws are covered with water. This is especially nice for dogs that walk around on hot cement not to mention they can lay down in the water for a refreshing bath. Just like with the water bowls, water should be replaced as needed so it does not get to hot and defeat the purpose of having a pool.
Shade
We have a large canape where the dogs have more then enough shade to lounge. If you don’t have a canape you can use large umbrellas or a dog house. The shade is a perfect place to store food, water and pools and will also keep the water cooler for a longer period of time.
Be dog smart
If you have done all of these steps and your dog is still suffering from the heat be cool and bring them inside the house during the day. If you enjoy taking your dogs out for a car ride make sure you take them out of the car each time you exit the car. Temperatures inside can rapidly rise causing your dog heat stroke which can lead to your dogs death. Keep their hair short, the longer and thicker their hair the hotter they become.
Taking the extra time to make some of these changes will only make for happier and healthier dog. It is our responsibility as pet owners to keep out animals safe. Your pets will thank you for it.
